As my business celebrates turning 5 this month, here are 5 things that I’ve learned along the way -
1) Don’t panic that work won’t turn up
It was scary at first not knowing how I’d find clients and I worried that I wouldn’t have enough work. However, after spending a lot of time during the first year networking and getting to know people, I have been able to build up a great client base that I am proud of. As such, my advice here for anyone starting out is to prepare to network regularly at first but keep the faith and trust in yourself and your abilities.
2) How much I value my network of fellow part-time Finance Directors
We share our experiences, act as soundboards for each other and ask for advice as there is always something new to learn. I am very grateful I met them, and I’d strongly recommend building your own support group with people in similar roles.
3) The importance of good bookkeeping
Without decent bookkeeping, there is little point in carrying on in business! That may sound dramatic but good bookkeeping provides the foundations that everything else is built on. This is why I have grown my team and I now have 3 part-time bookkeepers helping me to grow my clients’ businesses.
4) How lovely colleagues make work feel less like work
I am really pleased that I have been able to grow my team and work with wonderful people. It is important to me to offer flexible work that works for us all and I am proud of my team and the work we do.
5) How much of a kick I get from helping my clients
I love seeing their businesses go from strength to strength and it gives me a real buzz to be able to play a part in their success.
Here’s to the next 5 years!
